Fireworks can be scary

Happy 4th of July!! This is a day with a lot of celebrations, including BBQs, picnics, fireworks, swimming, and time together with friends. I want to take time for us to just be mindful of those around us. There are a lot of people that struggle with PTSD, and fireworks can be re-traumatizing (for animals and people both). Here are just a few tips to help be mindful of those around us:

  • Please let your guests know ahead of time of what to expect fireworks (if there will be any).

  • Set a timeframe to ensure that all feel prepared with options to leave prior if they would like.

  • Do not tease a person about fireworks making them uncomfortable.

  • Acknowledge that this day can be hard for some.

  • Be a support and safe space for the person.

And if you don't feel up to celebrating this year, that's OK too. Maybe instead of fireworks and BBQs you can take some quiet time just for yourself and your closest companion.

Whatever you choose to do over the long weekend, we hope you have a safe and happy holiday!
