Why We Should Stop Chasing Other People's Dreams

(aka How to Live Authentically)

Have you ever felt like you were living someone else's life? Like you were following a script that wasn't written for you? It's a common feeling, and unfortunately, it often leads to unhappiness and a lack of fulfillment. In this article, we'll explore the pressure to conform to societal, familial, and peer expectations, the consequences of living for others, and the benefits of living for yourself. We'll also discuss strategies for overcoming the fear of disappointing others and living authentically.

Living Other People's Values

Many of us grow up with a set of expectations placed upon us. We're told what we should study, what career path we should take, who we should marry, and how we should live our lives. These expectations come from a variety of sources, including family, friends, society at large and social media. While some of these expectations may align with our own values and desires, many do not. As a result, we may find ourselves living a life that doesn't feel like our own. It's like wearing a suit tailored to someone else's body - the suit is nice but it doesn't quite fit or feel right on our skin. This is a problem because when we live someone else's life, we are not living our own. We are not being true to ourselves, and this can lead to feelings of unhappiness, lack of fulfillment, and regret.

Living according to someone else's values can lead to unhappiness, lack of fulfillment, and regret. It's important to identify our own values and live in alignment with them. We need to understand what's important to us and what we want in life. When we live according to our own values, we are more likely to experience happiness, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose.

Craving Conformity

Society has a set of expectations for how we should behave, what we should look like, and what we should achieve. We're told that success means having a high-paying job, a big house, and a fancy car. We're bombarded with images of perfect bodies, perfect families, and perfect lives. These expectations can be overwhelming and difficult to live up to. We are constantly pressured to conform and be like everyone else.

Our families also have expectations for us. They may want us to follow in their footsteps, pursue a certain career, or marry a certain type of person. While our families may have our best interests at heart, their expectations may not align with our own desires. This can be especially challenging when it comes to cultural or religious expectations.

Our peers can also exert pressure on us to conform. We may feel pressure to fit in with a certain group, dress a certain way, or participate in certain activities. Peer pressure can be especially strong during adolescence, but it can continue into adulthood as well. We want acceptance and validation from our peers, and we may compromise our own values and desires to achieve it.

Consequences of Conformity

When we live for others, we often sacrifice our own happiness. We may be pursuing a career that doesn't align with our passions or staying in a relationship that isn't fulfilling. These choices can lead to feelings of emptiness and dissatisfaction. We are not living our own lives, and this can have a negative impact on our mental health.

“Be yourself, everyone else is taken.” Oscar Wilde

Living for others can also lead to a lack of fulfillment. We may be achieving someone else's definition of success but not our own. This can leave us feeling unfulfilled and like something is missing from our lives. We are not pursuing our own passions and desires, and this can lead to a sense of emptiness. Finally, living for others can lead to regret. We may look back on our lives and wish we had made different choices. We may regret not pursuing our passions or not being true to ourselves. This can lead to feelings of sadness and disappointment.

The Solution: Living Authentically

When we live for ourselves, we have the opportunity to discover who we truly are at our most authentic core. We can explore our passions, try new things, and figure out what makes us happy. This can lead to a greater sense of self-awareness and self-confidence. We are able to understand ourselves better and know what we want in life.

“Be yourself—not your idea of what you think somebody else’s idea of yourself should be.” Henry David Thoreau

Living for ourselves can also lead to increased happiness. When we're pursuing our passions and living in alignment with our values, we're more likely to feel fulfilled and satisfied with our lives. We are doing what we love and what makes us happy, and this can have a positive impact on our mental health.

Finally, living for ourselves can give us a greater sense of purpose. When we're pursuing our passions and living in alignment with our values, we feel like we're making a difference in the world. We have a sense of direction and meaning in life, and this can lead to a greater sense of fulfillment.

"The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are." Carl Jung

One of the biggest barriers to living authentically is fear. We may be afraid of disappointing our families or friends. We may be afraid of being judged or rejected. It's important to identify these fears and address them head-on. We need to understand what is holding us back from living our own lives. Communication is key when it comes to living authentically. We need to communicate our desires and values to our loved ones and explain why they're important to us. We also need to be open to their concerns and try to find a compromise that works for everyone. We need to be clear about what we want in life and why it's important to us.

Finally, setting boundaries is an important part of living authentically. We need to be clear about what we will and won't tolerate from others. We also need to be willing to say no when something doesn't align with our values or desires. We need to be assertive and stand up for ourselves.

But Is It Worth It?

Living for someone else's values is a recipe for unhappiness. It's important to identify our own values and live in alignment with them. The pressure to conform can come from society, family, and peers. Living for others can lead to unhappiness, lack of fulfillment, and regret. When we live for ourselves, we have the opportunity to discover who we truly are, increase our happiness, and find a greater sense of purpose. Overcoming the fear of disappointing others requires identifying and addressing our fears, communicating with loved ones, and setting boundaries. Living authentically is not always easy, but it's worth it. When we're true to ourselves, we're more likely to find happiness, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose. So, take some time to reflect on your values and desires. Figure out what makes you happy and pursue it with passion and conviction. Remember, this is your life, and you deserve to live it on your own terms.
